Acne scars are one of the most common skin-related disorders. Though acne is short-term, scars remain and serve as an indication of the problem, making the scars more than basically skin deep. In a generation where communication and interactions with others are made possible by visual media, it might be frustrating for patients. Acne scar medical care should always start with eliminating the acne so that scars do not reoccur after the treatment has ended.

What are the different types of acne scars?

Pigmented acne scars – These scars are at the same level as the skin and appear darker than the surrounding skin. Pigmented scars can be generally black or red.

Depressed acne scars – These acne scars occur below the skin’s layer. These have been divided into three different types based on their shape: ice pick scars, rolling scars, and boxcar scars. The shape of the scars influences the outcome as well, with rolling scars agreeing to any treatment.

Elevated acne scars – These acne scars are elevated above the level of the skin. They can be small and soft (seen on the nose or chin) or large and hard (seen on the chest and back).
